PARANG LA TREK, KIBBER TO TSO MORIRI LAKE TREK IN LADAKH – HIMACHAL -INDIA

Parang la is the most famous trek route of Spiti from the ancient times and connects people of Spiti to that of Ladakh after crossing the mighty 18600 ft pass. This trek has fantastic view of the mountains and Pare Chu River. This is a photographer’s paradise as it takes you through the deep gorges and desert environment of Spiti valley to vast landscapes of Ladakh and ending at Tso Moriri Lake. This lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

 

Trek starts from the beautiful Spiti valley (Kibber Village), in Himachal Pradesh over high mountain passes to the picturesque, turquoise water lake of Tso Moriri at Korzok in Ladakh. It is one of the most beautiful trails in the Western Himalayas going over Parang L Pass (5,580 mt.) with its grand views. The trek route follows the traditional old trade route from Tibet to Spiti and from Spiti to Ladakh valley.

Day 4: Trek from Dumla to Thaltak Meadow (4,600mt.)
Day 5: Trek from Thaltak to Bongrojen (5,050mt.)
Day 6: Trek from Bongrojen to Dak Karzong (4850mt.) (via Parang La pass/5,580mt.)
Day 7: Trek from Dak Karzong to Datang Yongma (4,650mt)
Day 8: Trek from Datang Yongma to Chumik Shilde (4,330mt.)
Day 9: Trek from Chumik Shilde to Kyangdam (Tso moriri lake) (4,510mt.)
Day 10: Trek from Kyangdam to Korzok (4,570mt.)
Day 11: Drive from Korzok to Leh.
Day 12: Leh Sightseeing

Itinerary

Day 01: DELHI - CHANDIGARH – MANALI (2,050mt./Train / Drive.)
Early morning transfer to New Delhi railway station to catch train for Chandigarh. After 4 hours train ride we board a car for Manali. This is a 7hrs scenic mountain drive. Manali, a beautiful Himalayan hill station nestled near the Northern end of the Kullu Valley in the Beas River Valley. Evening explore the surroundings followed by the opening dinner and overnight stay in hotel.

DAY 02: MANALI – KAZA (3800mt./Drive 200 km./8 hrs.)
Today we will make an early start after the breakfast, as it is the longest day’s journey driving on a bumpy rough road to Kaza (8-10 hrs). On the way we will stop for lunch and various photo stops. Today we will cross two mountain passes, Rohtang pass (3,980 mt.) and Kunzum Pass (4,550 mt.) and also visit the temple on the pass where travelers say prayers before heading down the pass. Today the views changes very dramatically from green to Brown and further to sandy barren landscapes. We will reach Kaza (district headquarters of Spiti valley) in the evening and check in at the hotel.Overnight in hotel &dinner.

DAY 03: KAZA – KIBBER – DUMLA (4200mt/Drive/Trek 18 km./6 hrs.)
After breakfast we drive to the highest village in the world, Kibber (4205mt.) and trek from start kibber, this is the first day of trekking and our first experience of exercising at high altitude. We walk down to a small river and up through the steep gorge bed to reach our camp at the village of Dumla. It is a short day's trek arriving in time for lunch. We use it to acclimation to the high altitude.Overnight in tent & dinner.

DAY 04: DUMLA – THALTAK MEADOW (4600mt/Trek 8km./ 5hrs.)
We make an early start to reach the pass. The trail is demanding to start and the last 4km. to pass quite steep. Parang La is the Pass along an old trade rout Another short day trek to acclimates with around 400 mt .height gain. It is a steep ascent gaining altitude in a fairly short span of time. Camp at Thaltak meadow with great views of surrounding mountain, we encourage another short time in the afternoon to help acclimatation.Overnight in tent & dinner.

DAY 05: THALTAK - BONGROJEN (5050mt. / Trek 14 km./ 7hrs.)
Now trail descend to Parilungla Chu. Climb to saghthag and walking over moraine stretch further gradual and exhausting climb to reach the glaciated valley, one to the north and one to the south. We will follow the moraine stretch towards north and then arrive at the campsite of Bongrojen which is a old camping ground, and is served as the base camp to Parang La Pass. Evening tea and snacks will be prepared freshly and served to you in the camp, rest of the time free to explore the area.Overnight in Tent &dinner.

DAY 06: BONGROJEN – PARANG LA (5490mt.) – DAK KARZONG (4850mt./Trek 12km./ 7 hrs.)
From the camp we start climb up gradually to Parang La Pass (5,580 mt). on patches of snow. Parang La offers panoramic and spectacular views of the peaks of Spiti valley, Changthang valley in Ladakh ( Central Himalayas & Great Himalayas), and the pass falls on the old trade route between Tibet to Spiti and to Ladakh. Parilungi, a conical peak, is the first Ladakhi peak visible from the pass in Spiti valley. Parang chu river whose source is on the southern slopes of Parang La, can be seen flowing below. After the pass, the landscape changes dramatically from steep gorges to broad plains. Descend through crevasses and glacier, following the left site of river arrive at campsite of Dak Karzong. Overnight in tent & dinner.

DAY 07: DAK KARZONG – DATANG YONGMA (4650mt./ Trek 12 km./5hrs.)
Today it is a gentle and easy walking along the river Pare Chu. It will be crossed before arriving to the Dhutung ( Datang Yongma)camp site. Evening tea and snacks will be prepared freshly and served to you in the camp, rest of the time free to explore the area. Overnight in tent & dinner.

DAY 08: DATANG YONGMA – CHUMIK SHILDE (4330mt./Trek 15 km./ 7hrs.)
Today we follow the trail to Racholemo (14000 ft.) then Norbu Sumdo (14400 ft.) and across to Chumik Shilde. Start early as the winds can be strong in the afternoon.Ovenight in tent & dinner.

Day 09: CHUMIK SHILDE – TSO MORIRI (4510mt. /Trek 14 km. /5 hrs.)
A wonderful and exciting day of trekking as the landscape changes dramatically. Walking through pastures and sandy patches the valley becomes broader and broader. Walking through flat ground of the Changthang plateau we finally arrive at Tso-Moori Lake. The lake is 24 kms in length and 6kms wide. Its shimmering surface reflecting the towering peaks that surround it is a sight to behold. We arrive at the Southern end of Tso Moriri Lake.Changpas (Tibetan nomads) can be seen with their flocks of sheep’s, goats and yaks near around the lake. The barren hills support a sparse population of wild life and bird life. Including Kyang or kiang (the Tibetan wild ass- after them this place is known as kiang dom), bar headed goose the migratory birds, black-necked ducks etc. Evening tea and snacks will be prepared freshly and served to you in the camp, rest of the time free to explore the area.Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 10: TSO MORIRI – KORZOK (4217mt./ Trek15 km./7hrs.)
The last day of the trek passes along the shore of Tso Moriri. The view of the lake with Lungser Kangri (6666mt.) in the background is unforgettable. The walk is longer than it looks and with the afternoon winds you will be tired when you reach Karzog. Visit the ancient monastery in Karzog, where the Changpas roam the pastures with their flocks of pashmina goats and still live in yak-skin yurts. Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 11: KORZOK – LEH (3500 mt./ Drive 226 km./ 8 hrs.)
After the breakfast we will be driving you to Leh by the jeep which has come from Leh to take us back into the town. A long but beautiful day’s drive back to Leh via Mahe Bridge and travelling along the Indus river valley gets us to Leh by late afternoon. Overnight in hotel & dinner.

Day 12 DAY EXPLORE THE LEH.
Today you have a day at leisure. It is a free day to explore Leh by foot, or to visit the local market for your final shopping of Buddhist art, craft, carpets , silver jewelry etc. You can have lunch in the local restaurant where you can enjoy the choice of some Tibetan food. Second night in the same hotel in Leh.

Day 13: LEH –DELHI ( FLY).
After breakfast, in the early morning we will assist you to Leh airport to board the flight back to New Delhi. After your arrival at New Delhi airport you will be met & assisted and accompany you to your hotel.later on you may wish to go for a sightseeing tour of Delhi to view some of the famous sights of the town with a guide. We will take a walking tour of the Old Delhi covering the Chandani Chowk, historic Red Fort, and the busy market. Return back to your hotel in the evening. Overnight stay and dinner in the hotel in Delhi.
