PIN PARVATI PASS (MANIKARAN –SPITI) TREK IN HIMACHAL PRADESH – INDIA

The Pin Parvati valley is considered the most beautiful in the Himachal Pradesh. A similar experience for trekkers is the trans-Himalayan trek through Pin Parvati Pass – picturesque, challenging and rarely visited! Located in Himachal Pradesh, Pin Parvati Pass is a mountain pass that connects the barren Pin valley in Spiti and green and fertile Parvati Valley in Kullu. Perhaps this is the only important pass in Himachal that was not discovered by enterprising local shepherds. After the trek we take a break around in Spiti valley exploring some old monasteries.

Manikaran (1700mts.) a popular tourist place is the first destination on the trail. Manikaran is famous for the hot water springs; People believe that Shiva and Parvati spent eleven years at Manikaran.

Itinerary

Day 01: DELHI - CHANDIGARH – MANALI (2,050mt./Train / Drive.)
Early morning transfer to New Delhi railway station to catch train for Chandigarh. After 4 hours train ride we board a car for Manali. This is a 7hrs scenic mountain drive. Manali, a beautiful Himalayan hill station nestled near the Northern end of the Kullu Valley in the Beas River Valley. Evening explore the surroundings followed by the opening dinner and overnight stay in hotel.

Day 02: MANALI – MANIKARAN – KALGA (2290 mt./Drive 100 km./ 4 hrs.)
From Manali drive to Manikaran hot springs 90 km. from Manali then drive another 9 km. to Barsheni.Trek to Kalga village a small clearing in the thick pine forest, through the misty and heavily wooded virgin forests of the Kullu valley.Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 03: KALGA – KHIRGANGA (2960 mt. / Trek10 km./4 hrs.)
Except to short steep climb in between, the trek through the forest to Khir ganga is a pleasant walk.Khir Ganga is a holy place with a hot water spring. Small temple of lord Shiva and a bathing tank . this is a last chance to take a hot water bath on the trek. According to the myth, this is the hot spring where Lord Shiva meditated. Reach the camp side .Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 04: KHIRGANGA – TUNDA BHUJ (3285 mt./Trek 15 km./6 hrs.)
The trek is covered with trees of pine and is heavily wooded. Tunda Bhuz is the upper limit for the pine forest and there is an abundance of Bhuz (Birch) trees. Camp at lush green campsite. Overnight in tent & dinner.
Day 05: TUNDA BHUJ – THAKAR KUAN (3560 mt./Trek 16 km/6 hrs.)
This is a challenging day of the trek, because the trek is steep and difficult in some section close to Thakur kuan.This area lies within the Kanawar wild life sanctuary and one may cross small Himalayan brown ears at lower altitude and wild sheep or snow leopards in high altitude.

Day 06: THAKAR KUAN – ODI THACH (3770 mt./Trek 12 km/4 hrs.)
Today’s trek includes crossing the Parvati River few times. First notable one is to cross the river and go to its right bank through a pulley bucket system. Later we cross the same river using the Pandu Pull named after the Pandava brothers of Mahabharata, which is a natural boulder spanning the Parvati River. This is indeed a masterpiece of local engineering. After this we take the left bank of the river and a gradual ascent leads us the alpine meadow of Odi Thach. Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 7: ODI THACH – MANTALAI LAKE (4116 mt./Trek 14 km./5 hrs.)
Today we trek to Mantalai Lake, considered to be the origin of Parvati River. At the beginning the trail is gradual up and as we leave behind the vegetation, we enter into the glacial moraine and debris. First we go ahead into a broad valley and then to a moraine ridge seen ahead to its left. This is the ridge that dams the Mantalai Lake. A temple and many traditional cairns and flags will welcome you. Distance around 9 Km.

Day 08: MANTALAI LAKE – CAMP I (Base camp of Pin Parvati)(4573 mt./ Trek 12 km./6 hrs.)

The day 1st part 300 mt. climb to the base camp Pin Parvati camp I. Crossing terminal moraine and walking by cairns through boulders is high altitude ritual and experienced trekkers will find it easy and first timers will be able to learn how to find route among boulders and scree of terminal moraine. The peaks on the far side of the valley also come in to full view-including Pyramid peak (6036mt.),Snow Peak (5640mt.) and the unnamed peak (6127m),the highest in the region. There are magnificent views of the surrounding peaks from the high camp including those on the far side of the Parwati Valley. Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 09: CAMP I – PIN PARVATI PASS (5319mt.) – PIN VALLEY CAMP (4320 mt./Trek 12 km./8 hrs.)
Trek start early morning across the huge open ice field leading to the pass in the east. We need to negotiate the crevasses and hard icy slopes carefully. While walking on the perma frost region we see the glacial lake formation and snow capped peaks. To reach the Pin Parvati Pass (5319 mt.) we climb a steep rocky ridge. The pass offers a wide panorama of peaks and the valleys of Spiti. We descent from the pass, first on snow and ice and then on steep loose scree. Finally we cross an ice cold wide open stream and reach the camp over the pass on a patch of grass on the left bank of the Pin River. Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 10: PIN VALLY CAMP – MUD (3955 mt./ Trek 16 km./6 hrs.)
From today onwards the valley is typically Spitian, barren, but with patches of grass and scree. Start early in the morning and we follow the left bank of Pin River to descent gradually. We reach Chinpatta Maidan .One can see the route leading towards the Bhaba Pass for Kinnaur on the other side of the river. From here scenically proliferation of the colored mountains mesmerizes you as the Pin valley broadens up. The trail gently descends along the left bank of the river and reaches Mud s just before the main village. Overnight in tent & dinner.

Day 11: MUD – KAZA (3610 mt./ Drive 50 km./ 3-4 hrs.)
Drive takes us out of pin valley through villages of this valley. Sagnam is the largest village in the Pin valley. It can take us 3 to 4 hours to reach Kaza in Spiti valley. Check in Hotel or set the camp, after lunch Visit the ancient Ki monastery and the highest permanently inhabited village of Kibber, Back to Kaza. Overnight in hotel / tent & dinner.

Day 12: KAZA - MANALI (2050mt./Drive 209 km./ 8 hrs.)
Today takes us the 209 km’s to Manali by jeep – a pretty spectacular drive over the Kunzum La (4590 mt.) and Rohtang Passes (3980 mt.) Kunzum La connects the Spiti Valley with Lahaul and the Rohtang Pass connects Lahaul with Manali. Arriving early evening we check in hotel. Overnight in hotel & dinner.

Day 13: MANALI – KALKA – DELHI (Drive / Evening train)
Early Morning drive to Kalka and board the evening Kalka Shatabdi (12012) to Delhi departing at 1745 hrs and arriving New Delhi Railway Station at 2155 hrs.Transfer to hotel. Overnight in Hotel.
