WINTER CHADAR TREK (FROZEN RIVER) ZANSKAR
Trek on Frozen River (Chadar) of Zanskar is an ultimate experience for adventure lover. The traditional name of the trek is "Chadar trek" the frozen sheet, which was only way in and out for Zanskar in winter when all other ways are closed due to heavy snow fall at high passes. The strenuous walk connects us from Ladakh to the snow bound villages of the Zanskar Valley, covering a distance of approximately 90-100 kilometers. Now the route is also famous as winter trekking among adventure lovers. For last several years, The Chadar Expedition is an adventurous trek plunging deep into the heart of Zanskar, an area of rare beauty. From January to February the Zanskar River freezes for a few weeks, this spectacular trek follows the traditional trading route through the Zanskar Gorge. The Gorge - impassable during the summer months, is a lifeline to the outside world in the depths of winter. The Chadar region is rarely visited by foreigners and allows a glimpse of this enchanting winter universe, dramatic mountains and glaciers, home to the Zanskari people and their ancient Zanskar Monasteries. Local stays in villages and river side Caves. Intense cold to be expected the early morning and evening.

WINTER CHADAR TREK ( FROZEN RIVER)
DAY 01 : DEHLI – DELHI – LEH (3500mt. / Flight
The moment you land at the Leh airport, one of the highest airports in the world, you will feel the fresh and crisp air, and a drastic drop in the temperature. The town has just begun shedding off the thick winter slumber and is slowly coming to life. Taking a stroll through the Leh market, you will find that very few shops and eateries in the town are open for business; but if required, some last minute-shopping for the trek can be done here. The chill in the air will serve only as a preview of the temperatures during this winter trek.Overnight in Guest house & dinner.
DAY 02 : LEH – CHILLING – TILAD DO (3100mt./Drive/ Trek 5hrs.)
Wakeup early in the morning and walk towards Shanti Stupa, a sacred Buddhist stupa, from where you will get an opportunity to witness a beautiful view of the sunrise and a panoramic sight of the town of Leh. Later drive towards Chilling – the beautiful village, and this ride turns bumpy as you pass by Nimu village, where the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet. Make a halt at Nimu and admire the beauty of the natural environs, besides clicking pictures of the scenic landscape. After spending some time at this place, continue your drive to the campsite of Tilad Do. By the time you would have walked a little on the frozen ice, the dusk would be approaching. So, you will have to set up your tents quickly and get inside your warm, comfortable sleeping bags as the temperature here drops in a matter of minutes. Keep yourself warm inside the tents and get some good rest before the real journey starts on the following day. Overnight in tent & dinner.
DAY 03: Day 03: TILAD DO – GYALPO (3160mt./ Trek 12 km./6hrs.)
The biggest challenge of this day, and all the remaining days, is to get out of the warm toasty sleeping bags and go out into the giant freezer outside. Today is a long walking session, about 12 km, on the Chadar (Frozen River). Depending on the weather, the Chadar can assume various forms. It can be a cold and hard surface of slippery ice, or it can have a dusting of snow over it, providing a good grip. The ice can be thick or thin, and its best to keep closely following the guide. The locals, it appears, have a sixth sense as to where exactly to step on the Chadar. At places, it might be necessary to wade through ankle deep water, or climb on the cliffs at the side of the river. Eventually you get used to walking on the Chadar, which looks like a cross between Gliding and Skating.Overnight in tent & dinner.
DAY 04: Day 04: GYALPO – TIBB CAVE/TIBB (3240mt./Trek 14 km./ 7hrs.)
Post breakfast, we set off for Tibb Cave. Today we trek through the deep gorges of the Zanskar valley with sheer cliffs on both sides. The lack of direct sunlight keeps the snow well packed for the trek. We end the day at the big cave here which is used by the locals when traversing this valley and set up camp for the night.Overnight in tent & dinner.
DAY 05: Day 05: TIBB CAVE – NAERAK (3400mt./ Trek 11 km./ 7hrs.)
Today is the most spectacular of all days on this trek. Walking on the river you cross deep gorges and reach a point where Juniper trees are covered with prayer flags. The porters give you a twig of this tree tied with a piece of prayer flag as a badge of good-luck and good-health. A few steps away stand the mother-of-all frozen waterfalls – a huge instance of suspended animation several feet tall and equally wide. You can see dozens of colors in this enormous ice structure as sunlight plays off its surface. The Naerak village lies several feet above the river, a vigorous hour-long trek can take you to the village if you want to see the life of a Zanskari. Overnight in tent & dinner.
DAY 06: NAERAK – TIBB (Trek 11 km./ 7hrs.)
On this particular day, start your return trip and proceed towards Tibb. The return trail would not be easy and the river quickly reacts to any change in the temperature. By now the frozen river might have taken an entirely new form. On the way back, admire the beauty of the region, click pictures and meet locals, who can be seen wearing traditional woolen Gonchas (robes). Upon Dib Cave, relax and stay overnight at the campsite.Overnight in tent & dinner.
DAY 07 :TIBB – GYALPO
Today you will start the trekking from Tibb go up to Gyalpo today. The high walls of mountains rising from the sides of the river almost look like castle walls. You can see several trails of pug-marks all along the trek – footprints belonging to foxes, ibex or snow-leopards. You would be lucky to view a snow-leopard, but you can almost be sure that you are being watched by one all the time. Overnight in tent& dinner.
DAY 08: GYALPO – TILAD DO – LEH (Trek / Drive/ 7hrs.)
Today is the last trek day as we trek back towards Tilad Do. Here we cross the frozen Zanskar for the last time and then board our vehicles to drive back to Leh.
