Roopkund is a small lake above the snowline of the Greater Himalayas. It is a very small swallow lake, maximum 2 meters in depth and generally remains under the snow for 8 months in a year. Roopkund Lake is also known as the Skeleton Lake, which date back to 14th century AD. Hundreds of human bodies buried here. Nobody knows, how? Carbon Dating suggests that these skeletons buried here from almost hundred years when some people died in a fatal hailstorm. But the question remains same, why those hundreds of people came to such isolated place? Some believe they came here for religious purpose, other believes that they were here for commercial purpose. Some even believe that they belong to the army of a King and they came here for a political purpose. Whatever was the reason for their presence at this place, they never went back. They became an integral part of Mighty Himalayas and this place became the part of many mysteries of Himalayas. Today, Roopkund Trek is considered among the best treks in India.
The trek of the Roopkund Lake passes through delightful alpine pastures and snowfields and offers magnificent views of peaks such as Trishul (7120m) & Nanda Ghunti (6310m) . It is also the same route that’s taken in the famous Raj Jat Yatra that’s held once in 12 years.
Eearly morning transfer to the railway station to catch the express train to Haridwar. The train journey takes approximately 4 hours. Arriving at Haridwar at lunch time midway, 0ne hrs. Short drive to Rishikesh on the banks of the Ganges. Check in the hotel. Afternoon visit some of the temples of this holy town Rishikesh Himalayas and in the evening we will witness the ceremony. Shortly after sunset, the puja is performed in all of the temples lining the river at the same time, with a cacophony of musical instruments and voices. Afterwards, offerings of lamps and flowers are made to the Ganges and it is a moving sight to watch hundreds of miniature lamps float along the river. Overnight in Hotel & Dinner.
The day starts with a beautiful drive along the river Ganges. En route visit the famous Prayags (confluences) of historic as well as religious importance, Devprayag is the most notable of all the mentioned confluences, as this is the spot where rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet to form most revered river for Hindus – The Ganges. Continue to drive further via Rudraprayag and Karanprayag to reach Lohjung. Overnight in Tents & Dinner.
Today’s walk is gradual apart from the last stretch to reach Dedina village. The walk is through an enchanting mixed forest abundant in bird life so carrying a bird book will be a good idea. You will cross a few crystal clear streams that means opportunities to experience the ‘Himalayan Bite’, the sting that you get from cold streams and also walk through a couple of villages to appreciate a lifestyle typical of the terrain. After about 4 -5 hrs of walking, initially going downhill and then up again, you will reach the campsite above Didana village getting full view of the trail for tomorrow leading to the famous Ali & Bedni bugyal (meadows). Today after a steady ascent through thick oak forest we will come to the alpine grazing meadows called Ali bugyal. It’s a super place for taking a break and to enjoy the views of unending vistas in all directions and if the sky is clear you will be mesmerized by the views of the Trishul peak. From here on it’s a pleasure walk till Bedni bugyal with the gradient being moderate. Bedni bugyal is a very fine camping site with vast open views and grazing pastures all around, not to forget the close views of the Trishul & Nanda Ghunti peaks. Overnight in Tents & Dinner.
Post breakfast, we begin our climb up the meadow slopes and trek to the ridge on top with bright views of the beautiful world. We’d pass another ridge to the stone shrine at Kalu Vinayak – where believers often offer a prayer for a safe pilgrimage to Roopkund. Depending upon the season we’d even be blessed with snowy trails from here on to our campsite at Bhagubasa. Overnight in Tents & Dinner.
After an early breakfast, we’d leave for the beautiful glacial lake Roopkund, almost like a crater in the mountains. The trek to the lake will be journey of 7 km taking us through moraine, rock gardens and snow patches. Many parts of this trail is steep and there are possibilities of it being under snow for most of the year. If there isn’t much of snow around the lake, we will get to see human bones and skeletons.. By evening come back to Bedni Bugyal. Overnight in Tents & Dinner.
Descend steeply through the forests of fir, rhododendron and pine to reach the valley floor. Cross over and climb to the village of Wan (2440m). Drive 4 hrs to reach the comforts of a hotel in Rudraprayag.Rudrapryag is confluence place where two holy rivers Alaknanda comes from Badrinath and Mandakini river comes from Kedarnath meet. Today you drive down to Haridwar, Gate of God & Goddess in Himalayas in India. You will get to visit the famous Ghats (holy bathing area) Har ki paudi ( foot prints of lord Vishnu , where the all Hindu pilgrims take holy bath and board the train from here for Delhi. Arrive late night at 2245 pm at Delhi Railway station & transfer to hotel. Overnight In Hotel & Dinner.
